Copenhagen Insights | Substance: Why the New Luxury Starts at the Roots

Substance: The biological foundation of the new luxury
The global fashion landscape has focused on the ‘finish and look’ of a garment – but there is subtle yet powerful change happening. As I tune into the virtual pre-events for the Global Fashion Summit this week, my focus is directed toward the start.
Luxury is only as resilient as the world it inhabits.
As part of the Summit’s 2026 theme, ‘Building Resilient Futures,’ I am filtering my reporting through a dedicated three-part framework:
    • Substance: This is the biological foundation of luxury. Exploring regenerative systems and all the raw materials that luxury is built upon.
    • Systems: The systems and policy. Tracking the digital infrastructure, EU regulations, and global collaborations that scale solutions.
    • Soul: The human soul. Unpacking the ethics, transparency, and craftsmanship that create a garment’s true value.
Today, we begin at the beginning: Substance.
We are moving past the era of ‘sustainable sourcing’ and entering the era of Restoration.
To see this in action, we must look at the innovators bridging the gap between agricultural waste and high-end textiles. I am particularly tracking two companies from the official Trailblazer Programme 2026 shortlist exhibiting this week:
    • Fibe: They have developed a proprietary process to convert potato harvest waste—a massive byproduct of the food industry—into high-performance luxury fibers. It offers the breathability of linen with a fraction of the environmental footprint.
    • Fiberly: They are engineering cellulose-based alternatives that perform like premium cotton but support a fully circular cycle, ensuring the product can eventually return to the earth.
The Insider Take:
Resilience starts at the roots. Tomorrow, we move from the fields to the boardroom for the GFA Policy Masterclasses to explore the Systems—the technical infrastucture and global policies.
